Sichuan Earthquake Relief and Reconstruction

On May 12th 2008, an earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale hit Beichuan Qiang County in Sichuan. At the time Shangri-la Institute for Sustainable Communities (SISC) was working with seven schools in the region all of which were severely damaged. Two other middle schools located in Beichuan who suffered extensive damages were included in the Water School programme subsequent to the earthquake. The determination of the teachers and students to rebuild their schools and communities and continue with the Water School for a Living Yangtze programme has been astounding. With help from Swarovski, who raised more than 3.6 million RMB for the schools and communities in the earthquake hit area, great progress has been made in both reconstruction and recovery.

In addition to direct emergency relief, long-term redevelopment efforts were required. The rebuilding of communities will continue to take many more years, much money, and will require our continued support. SISC has worked with local partners to initiate long-term redevelopment, including rebuilding ecosystems, physical infrastructure, and preserving cultural heritage, as well as providing counselling and capacity building.
