Participation: Community participation lies at the core of all SISC projects. We aim to empower communities through participation in unique learning processes. Without the input of local communities, development will not only fail to meet local needs, but is unlikely to be sustainable.

Education for a Sustainable China
SISC supports community-initiated education, conservation and cultural projects that empower local communities to engage in sustainable development. Over the last five years, SISC has implemented local and national programmes in China, promoting sustainable water resource management, community empowerment, and preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Selected highlights of our work and its impact on the schools and communities involved include:
- Establishing a network of more than 50 schools along the selected Yangtze River watersheds, dedicated to sustainable water-management education under Swarovski Water School Programme.
- Developing nine Community Learning Centres on the Tibetan Plateau as part of our Community Education for Sustainable Development Programme. The Centres provide training and activities focused on preserving indigenous culture and wisdom, and serve as a platform for building local capacity and eco-living.
- Facilitating Climate Change Education partnership with schools and universities across four regions of China, aiming to integrate global warming awareness into teaching curriculum and to develop CCE guidelines for recommendation to the Ministry of Education.
- Developing a long-standing partnership with Baima Xueshan Nature Reserve, as well as local monasteries, government officials and communities across the Tibetan Plateau.
